In my work for TV and magazines, I'm often asked to present style trends and show how to get that look for both a wardrobe and interior space. I also like to incorporate these trends into the events I style. Styling your life from trends is a good way to give your shopping some direction, whether you're shopping for your closet or your living room. Before you start shopping, get a clear picture of the trend: what are the elements (colours, shapes, fabrics, patterns) that define it? If you have a clear picture first, shopping will be easier and you'll be happier with your end result. In our latest style episode, Afiya and I really wanted to capture the mood of the English countryside. Before shopping we made a list of the defining features of this trend: tweed and wool fabrics, argyle and floral patterns, rich earth tones and high quality construction. When we arrived at Vaughan Mills, we were able to head straight to the stores we knew would help us match our trend elements: HomeSense, Liz Claiborne, Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and Benetton Outlet. The end result: a trend-focused, fabulous outfit and a striking interior to match! Take a quick peek at our video and you'll see for yourself how shopping for a trend can keep you focused, help you make shopping selections easier and make you a better stylist! |
Does fashion influence décor or does décor influence fashion? I think that it can go either way! If you're looking for fashion inspiration, I suggest that you take a close look around your favourite room at home and notice the elements that you tend to gravitate toward. What fabrics, colours and textures do you choose to surround yourself with? I bet that the answer will help lead you to an outfit that you adore. Or maybe it's your home that needs a shot of something new. If so, why not take note of what comprises your favourite outfit and incorporate those details in a room, using throws, cushions and other accessories? Janette & I both really like the English countryside trend as seen at runway shows like Ralph Lauren. Taking a cue from fashion, we found a great outfit at Liz Claiborne and used it as a starting point to create a room that reflected our love of the fashion trend. Relax and have fun – who knows, maybe you'll discover that you have a strong love for a particular style and didn't even know it! |
