One of my favourite things to shop for is a new coat. I love coats! I think that nothing finishes an outfit like a gorgeous jacket or coat. So many times I see a woman destroy a stylish outfit with a frumpy jacket. Shopping for the perfect coat can be a bit of a challenge. You want something neutral enough to go with everything (black or camel are the best options) and the style of the coat should work with both casual and dressy outfits. When Afiya and I set out on our outerwear style mission we knew we wanted a coat that was high quality (made of wool or cashmere), not too trendy, slim fitting and flattering. We found so many options! The styles at Carriere Studio were stunning, simple, refined and elegant. At French Connection, we found cute styles in bold colours (I bought a beautiful cobalt blue coat). A coloured coat is great for a secondary coat, a nice addition to the closet after the main coat has been found. The more Afiya and I shopped, we realized if you are able to find quality at great prices – which we were – you should really consider having three main coats. Something classic and neutral, a fun coat – coloured or trend focused – and finally something extra special like a faux fur cropped jacket (we found one at Melanie Lyne) for those dressy evenings out. |
I think that outerwear is one of those essential wardrobe items where you should try to buy the best that you can afford. Look at it as an investment: classics will stand the test of time, and what other piece of clothing do you wear nearly as much? While I agree with Janette that it's ideal to have a spectrum of coats to take you from events, to the weekend, through to work – be sure to start with a foundation piece that is a classic colour and shape. Think narrow silhouette in grey, black or brown (cream also works, but only if you're up for frequent visits to your drycleaner). Once you have that, then you can add a new coat each season that is a little trendier and less expensive. I'm also a big fan of vintage coats, and you can find some gems at reasonable prices. Just be sure to think about your coat as part of your outfit – there’s nothing worse than a great look paired with a schlumpy coat. Like the cover of a book, it doesn't necessarily guarantee a good read but it does make you take a look. |
