For as long as I can remember I have obsessed over vintage. I was inspired by my grandmother (or the Queen of Style as I liked to call her). She introduced me to all the fabulous styles of the '20s all the way up to the '70s. We would spend hours poring over old magazines, books about Hollywood starlets (until I was 12 I was convinced I was Veronica Lake) and watching classic style movies (Auntie Mame, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Rear Window). We were always putting new looks together and breaking down what elements went into making a classic style icon. The lessons that my grandmother taught me helped me become a stylist. I learned that you should always dress to flatter your figure, so select a vintage era that works with your body type. For example, I am a bit of a box (no waist, all legs) so while I love the hourglass shape of the early '60s, the longer, straight silhouette of the '20s and the '70s works best for me. Lately there is a real shortage of good quality, affordable vintage pieces. But all is not lost! So many brands, like Modern Vintage shoes and XXI's line "Twelve by Twelve", offer avid vintage fans vintage-inspired options that are in great shape and totally affordable. When you are shopping for vintage-inspired looks, remember to keep an open mind. Mix, match and play just like a stylist and I promise you will come up with a look that is totally individual and flatters you best! |
I adore shopping for vintage finds, it’s like a treasure hunt. However, the truth is, it can be difficult to find the time to spend hours searching through dusty bins and overstuffed racks on a regular basis. So what to do? Hit up Vaughan Mills in search of new pieces with a vintage vibe. Look for romantic fabrics like chiffon and matte silk. French Connection is one of my fave sources for blouses and dresses that are influenced by eras gone by. The best part: modern twists keep the look from feeling dated or ‘costumey’. It doesn’t matter whether they’re big & bold, or delicate & refined: accessories are a must. Lockets, cameos and brushed metal – XXI is a goldmine for inexpensive jewelry that looks as though it could have been found at an estate sale. Finally, be sure to mix up your ‘vintage’ finds with tougher pieces for a current take. What’s old is new again! |
