As a somewhat reclusive and shy child, books were often my best friends. And books that portrayed a fabulous, glamorous life were my favorites. I would spend hours at my local library poring over books about Hollywood's best–dressed and elegant ladies... Veronica Lake, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn. Not much has changed these days; the book shelves throughout my home are full of oversized books with glossy pictures of every Hollywood heroine you can think of, and my coffee table is piled high with magazines and clippings of modern day style icons like Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie, and Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. But it all makes you wonder: how much of the style is created by the celebrity, and how much is the work of a stylist? Stylists have been around since the birth of the stage, but they're also (more recently) reponsible for actors' off-screen attire. Style can have a big impact on actors' popularity. Take Nicole Richie for example: before stylist Rachel Zoe reshaped her look, she was seen as an indulgent, trampy reality TV personality. A bohemian-chic makeover launched her onto the cover of every magazine, on mainstream TV and designing her own jewelry and clothing line. In our latest mission, Afiya and I tackle recreating two of the most influential stylists' looks. First, in an attempt to capture the classic look of Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn, we channeled Edith Head. This look, with its classic lines, pencil skirts, pearls and elegant blouses, works as well today as it did yesterday. Carriere Studio is a mecca for this look: almost everything in this store screamed classic glam! We then headed to Five O Seven, home to modern day, Rachel Zoe style: we pulled some amazing floral dresses and fab faux fur and some great necklaces. So, next time you leaf through a magazine and check out your fave style icon, take a closer look at their look and incorporate elements into your own style! |
Is anything new? Name a trend, and you can be sure that it is a style resurrection. Your favourite fashion icons serve as wonderful inspiration for your wardrobe. The trick is to stamp classic inspiration with your personal touch. Typically, celebs come to mind when searching for a fashion muse, but Janette and I wanted to focus on the work of stylists who are often behind some of our fave Hollywood looks. Specifically, we chose Edith Head & Rachel Zoe, who we (along with everyone else!) believe to be past and present fashion legends. Edith Head worked with so many of the women who have gone down in history as fashion phenomenons: Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Ginger Rogers, to name a few. Her style is defined by its restraint. The clean lines of timeless costumes look as beautiful and appropriate today as they did in her heyday. I love Edith Head's style sense, but to make it my own modern look, I pair classic pieces like a tailored blazer, with a trendy accent or modern staple like dark wash denim. On this mission for example, we combined a classic gray pencil skirt from Carriere Studio with a more modern AMcQ bracelet from Holt Renfrew Last Call. While Janette favours Rachel Zoe's laid-back boho vibe, we appreciate the work of both women, and like to incorporate aspects from each. In fact, I think a little Rachel Zoe influence and a dash of Edith Head restraint is a recipe for the ultimate outfit. Imagine, a prim bow blouse, topped with a hippie-chic faux fur vest and black straight leg jeans – sounds like the perfect combination! |
