Summer is finally here! There's a lot going on in fashion this season, so Janette and Afiya set out to boil it down to 10 essential pieces that will help you beat the heat in style.

I love summer... I mean I really LOVE summer. The days are more relaxed and fun, and I always feel better about myself (a little tan can go a long way!). But the last thing anyone wants in the summer is a complicated, fussy wardrobe. With this in mind, Afiya and I decided to come up with our top 10 summer essentials. The idea behind this is maximizing your style while minimizing any wardrobe-related stress. With beach parties, patio afternoons, and outdoor activities mixed with hot sticky weather, a summer wardrobe needs to be flexible, functional, lightweight and a little carefree. And what is more carefree than having to shop for only 10 items? From a stylish fedora, to neutral accessories, a look of casual-chic is what ties our essentials together. I also love that we found our essentials for a song! One of my favourite picks, the bright tanks from Joe Fresh, will add just the right amount of colour to an outfit, and look best when paired with denim or linen bottoms. The best part of our essentials is that they will look great on anyone. We’ve made sure to include fabrics that flatter, cuts that are universally complementary, and we’ve even scooped a great summer bra from La Vie en Rose– say goodbye to bulges under t-shirts and showing straps on sun dresses! It can be tricky to look cool in sweltering temperatures, but a few key pieces will certainly take you a long way. Shorts, a rainbow assortment of tanks, crochet sweater, wedges, and a LWD (little white dress, of course); these are among my must-haves as they can be dressed up with the simple addition of a lightweight blazer or down – barefoot on the beach! Our top ten faves made the list because they are seasonally appropriate and are among the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe. They can be mixed and matched with one another but will also act as the perfect balance to trendy indulgences. One item that didn’t make the list, but that I’d like to give a shout out to, is a jumpsuit. Versatile and chic, it is an easy piece to throw on when it’s too hot to think straight. It unofficially ranks as my number 11. The best part? These pieces look equally at home lounging lakeside as they do toiling the pavement, so no matter what your summer brings, do it in style.
