What is it about fall that I love so much? Is it a crisp, yet warm day, painted in bright tones of autumn leaves... well, no. While that paints a pretty picture, what I love most about fall besides my giant issue of Vogue, is just knowing that the stores are brimming with all the latest looks for the season.

After all, when it comes to dressing, there is no season like fall. Really, think about it: spring and summer are great, but they are seasons of undress, removing layers. Winter, especially in Canada, is about coats, boots, coats and more boots. But fall... fall is about dressing, layers upon layers of pants, skirts, blouses, tops, jackets, coats, sweaters, vests, tights, dresses, belts, jewellery, shoes, boots. No season allows us as much fun and excitement in our wardrobes and the styles we put together as fall does.

I'm exceptionally excited for fall 2011. The looks – ranging from prairie-inspired chic (I'm on a total country bender) to film noir and '70s office-girl – are all so eclectic, fresh and totally flattering. Fashion designers are not following a single trend en mass, they are each presenting us with collections that blend styles, push boundaries and, with all the options available, help us create our signature looks. Afiya and I had a blast putting together our new fall wardrobes while shopping at Vaughan Mills. From H&M and Five O Seven to Levi's Outlet Store and Joe Fresh, the stores did not let us down. We found all the looks we were shopping for and more – yes, I found plenty of prairie, but Afiya also turned me onto the '70s Gucci-inspired look. Best part? My new faux fur vest will work for both looks!

I'm an advocate of adopting somewhat of a style "uniform" to hone your style and make getting dressed in the mornings as quick and easy as possible. But too much good taste makes your wardrobe a dull place, so it's essential to have a little fun with the seasons hottest trends – just be sure to stick to those that actually flatter and work well with your existing wardrobe. Never sacrifice your personal style just because you want the trend.

My personal favourites this season are bright pops of colour, metallic finishes, python prints, faux fur and menswear inspired pieces. The thing is, these are all elements that I would wear regardless of whether they were hot or not. I like the idea of adding subtle elements of a trend so that you still look like you. If you would never sport a python print, well why not try it in a shoe from Browns Outlet? Brights a bit shocking for your taste? Then maybe an inexpensive colourful nail polish from Joe Fresh is your best bet.  There's usually a way to seamlessly adopt a trend without totally revamping your wardrobe. I'd love to hear what updates you intend to add to your closet this season - tweet me @thestylehouse.

Happy Shopping!
